The Long-Enduring Lynchian Mania: Tracing Fashion's Obsession with David Lynch
Raf Simons' decamp from Calvin Klein has startled the brand's followers as The New York Times announced his unanticipated departure in late December. Following the abrupt exit (which was eight months before the end of his contract), Simons' homecoming in Paris for AW19 revealed the collection he's been working on since summer for his namesake line in the ornate rooms of the Shangri-La. The menswear show was dominated by coats of all kinds - a number of them catching the eye with embellishments of iconic stills from David Lynch films including Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart.
This isn't the first time Simons has expressed his fanatic passion towards the auteur's work in his own métier. For his AW16 menswear show, he made reference to Twin Peaks through his supersized American-style pullovers and quilted coats that heavily exuded Lynchian nostalgia.
The product of David Lynch's strange, complex, otherworldly imagination indeed laid a foundation for fashion and other fields of art and culture in depicting views of both reality and surreality. Here are some of the other collections where Lynch's influence has manifested itself:
