Fashion Month For Beginners
Fashion month, for people who are just starting to shyly develop a taste or a voice in this wide and multiphasic world, might seem to be thirty days of nothing but sophisticated fabrics, surprisingly tall stilettos, and excessively bold make up. And they are kind of right.
But what is fashion month exactly?
In February and September, it’s held this four-week event, during which designers present their new and fresh collections for the season ahead to give editors and buyers time to decide what they want to feature or buy before any garment reaches stores.
Traditionally, it all starts in New York –where back in 1943 the now known as fashion month was merely a trade event– before moving to London, Milan, and then Paris. The four cities have their own specific aesthetic and identity.
The clothes that are showcased during fashion weeks set the trends for the following months; everything you get to see later on high street shops, the internet, and basically everywhere, is surely influenced by what was exhibited on the previous fashion month.
New York Fashion Week.
Kicking off in the Big Apple, this week is generally the longest and the busiest one with congested schedules that contain some outstanding names such as Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford and Oscar de la Renta.
London Fashion Week.
In the City, the second week of fashion month conveys this duality of tradition and modernity since it’s place for shows of already established houses like Burberry, Vivienne Westwood, David Koma, etc., and emerging ones with new styles and never-heard-before names.
Milan Fashion Week.
The Italian metropolis puts on the most amusing and elaborated fashion shows of the extravagant and more than well-known houses like Prada, Versace, Fendi, and Gucci in which they are allowed to show us their strange yet grand design visions.
Paris Fashion Week.
It all comes to an end on Parisian locations. After three weeks of non-stop fashion shows, everyone would still agree that this one is by far the most magnificent out of all fashion weeks due to the excellence of the brands presenting their collections there. Houses like Saint Laurent, Dior, Chanel and Louis Vuitton among others, often pay homage to their opulent and rich histories and aesthetics, not only with the brand new pieces they show but with their sets and runways too.
The upcoming fashion month starts Thursday 5 September.
